If you want to be legally safe, you have to disclose many things in your blog.
Things like :
- The information you are collecting about the visitors
- The cookies your website is storing on the visitors’ browsers
- Third parties
- Intellectual properties
- And other things ….
In legal issues, there is no common sense. You have to be accurate and specific.
You can’t simply say it’s obvious that I am using cookies like all modern websites so why should I tell my visitors.
You can’t simply say it’s obvious that I am using Google Analytics to track the website traffic and understand more about my visitors’ behavior like most of the modern websites’ owners do.
OK, here is another one! Just because you blog about your experience in something, doesn’t protect you from getting sued by someone.
First example,
You are an athlete who blogs about health and fitness about losing weight, recommended supplements and best workouts to get six-packs. Someone can sue you if he harmed his back because of your advice or recommendation.
Another example,
You are a passionate mom who provides your audience with parenting advice. Based on your advice, some of your visitors have faced some negative impact on their children.
They may have the right to raise a case against you to get compensation.
This is also applied to you and your blog on any topic.
So you have to deny your personal liability to prevent someone who may consider your blog post as a peice of professional advice that caused bad consequences.
There are many other reasons that encourage you to have legal pages in your blog.
The very simple reason is that having legal pages is not an option. You have to Adhere to the law. For example, In the USA, the Federal Trade Commission has this page about many lawsuits against organizations that have violated consumers’ privacy or misled them or caused consumer injury.
If you are engaged in affiliate marketing and publish affiliate links on your blog then you also need an affiliate disclaimer to protect you legally.
So I just did my best to explain to you the importance of having the legal pages in your blog.
let’s move on and talk about the main 3 legal pages you need to have on your website/ blog.
Privacy Policy
The Privacy policy is the first document of the 3 main legal pages you need to have. It’s a document that explains how your organization will handle the customers’ information gathered in its operations.
All Customers’ data that you collect should be specified clearly in the privacy policy like name, email, address, files, comments, and cookies.
It should also cover :
- Third parties.
- GDPR visitor rights
- Children’s Privacy
And Other sections as well.
Disclaimers
The second one of the legal pages is Disclaimers. It’s a document that placed on your website to limit your liability for the outcome of the use of your site information.
Terms and Conditions
The third one of the legal pages is Terms and Conditions. It’s a contract between you and your visitors.
This document is more customized to your website and the services and product you provide to your visitors.
It usually covers topics such as the expected age of your visitors, your copyrights, refund/exchange policies.
How to Get Your Legal Pages
When I started this blog, I didn’t have the legal pages because I was focusing on building the blog including:
- The design
- The hosting company I need to choose
- The topics and the market niche I am targeting
- SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
- Creating good content that provides real value for my audience
- Drive the traffic to my blog
- Monetization
To avoid dedicating a big amount of time for the legal side. I decided to look for someone to help me with that. While my research, I came across Amira’s Legal Bundle.
