If you are a member of a Scrum Team, definitely you and your team have a Daily Scrum meeting every day.
If you think it’s a useless activity and a waste of time. If you think it’s just like any boring meeting.
Then you need to check the following 3 important notes about it:
- It is not a status meeting
- It is not a long meeting
- It is optional for Scrum Master
1- It Is Not A Status Meeting
A status meeting is the meeting when team members and stakeholders like project manager are gathered to discuss the overall project status, challenges, blockers if any, Maybe budget status and any needed updates.
The frequency of the status meeting varies from a project to another based on the complexities of the project.
So it’s a detailed meeting arranged by the project manager to evaluate the overall progress and report that to the higher management.
While in Scrum, Each day the development team will meet to give answers for 3 questions related to the sprint goal:
- What’s done yesterday?
- What’s about to be done today?
- Do I have any problem that prevents me from doing the work?
The daily meeting is an internal quick meeting for the development team only. It is not for the managers to know the status of the project.
2- It Is Not A Long Meeting
Daily Scrum is 15 minutes only and it is to raise issues not to solve them.
In case you have any issue, you just raise a flag in the daily scrum. Then, you can discuss that issue with the only involved members during the day.
In the next daily meeting, you will tell the team if that issue is solved or not.
3- Daily Scrum Is Optional For Scrum Master
Scrum Master has to make sure that all team members understand what Daily Scrum is and How to do it the right way.
Once the team becomes able to apply daily scrum the right way every day, The presence of Scrum Master in Daily Scrum becomes optional.
Following the 3 notes will keep the daily scrum concise, 15 minutes maximum, and help to improve the communication between development team.
